this is called postpartum thyroiditis (PPT).\u00b9 There are several symptoms of both an underactive and overactive thyroid that new mothers can look out for.\u00b9<\/p>      <\/div>\n  \n<div class=\"parent\">\n\t<div class=\"share-wrapper mb\">\n\n\t\t<div class=\"social-container\" id=\"socialBox\">\n\n\t\t\t<a id=\"facebookShare\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/thyroidaware\/images\/facebook-share.svg\" alt=\"Facebook\">\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n\t\t\t<a id=\"linkedinShare\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/thyroidaware\/images\/linkedin-share.svg\" alt=\"LinkedIn\">\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n\t\t\t<a id=\"whatsappShare\" target=\"_blank\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/thyroidaware\/images\/whatsapp-share.svg\" alt=\"WhatsApp\">\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n\t\t\t<a id=\"emailShare\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/thyroidaware\/images\/email-share.svg\" alt=\"Email\">\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n\t\t\t<a href=\"#\" id=\"copyLink\" data-copied=\"Link copied!\">\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/thyroidaware\/images\/link-share.svg\" alt=\"Copy Link\">\n\t\t\t<\/a>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"share-btn\" id=\"shareBtn\">\n\t\t\t<span>Share<\/span>\n\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"share-btn-detail-page\" src=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/thyroidaware\/images\/share-icon.png\" alt=\"\">\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n      <p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-359 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/new-mother.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"917\" height=\"627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/new-mother.webp 917w, https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/new-mother-300x205.webp 300w, https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/new-mother-768x525.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 917px) 100vw, 917px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>PPT and symptoms of an underactive thyroid<\/h3>\n<p>Approximately 25\u201345% of women who develop hypothyroid phase of PPT will experience the symptoms of an underactive thyroid.\u00b9 These include e.g. fatigue, loss of concentration, poor memory, constipation and possible depression.\u00b9<\/p>\n<h3>PPT and symptoms of an overactive thyroid<\/h3>\n<p>Between 20% and 30% of women who develop PPT experience symptoms of an overactive thyroid.\u00b9 These include e.g. fatigue, palpitations, weight loss, heat intolerance, nervousness, anxiety and irritability.\u00b9<\/p>\n<p>Hyperthyroidism in PPT usually occurs in the first 6 months after the baby is born (most commonly around 3 months) and usually lasts between 1 and 2 months.1 The hypothyroidism phase of PPT usually occurs between 3 and 8 months (most commonly at 6 months) and usually last 4 to 6 months.<\/p>\n<h3>How is PPT treated?<\/h3>\n<p>PPT is generally a passing and transient condition, and treatment is not needed in all cases.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New mothers without symptoms of an underactive thyroid but with TSH changes (not more than 10miU\/L) in the blood who are not planning another child do not necessarily need treatment.\u00b9<\/li>\n<li>However, thyroid monitoring\/checks between 4 and 8 weeks after diagnosis are recommended.\u00b9<\/li>\n<li>Women with the symptoms of hypothyroidism or who are planning a subsequent pregnancy should be treated with appropriate medication.\u00b9<\/li>\n<li>New mothers with symptoms of an overactive thyroid should consult their doctor for further treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Follow-up for women with PPT<\/h3>\n<p>Even though a diagnosis of thyroid problems may be scary, PPT is not generally a long-term condition and the majority of women find their thyroid gland works normally by the end of the first year after the birth of their baby.\u00b9 Should you experience any of the symptoms outlined above, please consult your doctor.<\/p>  \n\n      <div class=\"reference-toggle\">\n      <div class=\"ref-header1\" id=\"refToggle\">\n        <span>References<\/span>\n        <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"refimg\" id=\"refIcon\" src=\"https:\/\/thyroidaware.azinova.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/thyroidaware\/images\/ref-close.webp\" alt=\"\">\n      <\/div>\n\n      <div class=\"ref-content\" id=\"refContent\">\n        <ul>\n<li>De Groot L, Abalovich M, Alexander EK et al.
